I was surprised to learn that The Climb for Oculus Rift was actually made by the good folks at Crytek. These guys have made some very impressive games over the years and one thing that many people know about Crytek is that they are one of the very best when it comes to making games that have truly jaw-dropping visuals and this one here is no exception.

So what is the point of The Climb? Well as the name suggests you are a dude who loves to scale the most dangerous mountains around. This may be a dated reference, but if you ever wanted to climb like Tom Cruise at the start of Mission Impossible 2, this is the game for you. The game actually has three different “levels” for you to try and dominate. You start off with The Bay, before moving onto Canyon and The Alps. You may be thinking that three levels is a bit of a scam. However, there are multiple difficulty levels and each one takes you on a different route.

The controls are very easy to get to grips with. So far, I have only had the pleasure of playing with my Xbox One controller, but I have heard that touch support has now been added to the game. Basically, L and R work as your hands and you use your head to look at where you want to grab. It is pretty amazing to look all around you as the draw distance in the game is literally as far as the eye can see. I actually got a sore neck from looking up so much while I was playing this game, that is how immersive it is.

There are two other things to contend with. The first is your stamina. Of course, climbing is tiring stuff so a stamina meter makes sense. You drain stamina when you are hanging on with just one hand. When you are gripping with two, your meter will fill up. You can also use chalk. Apparently, this is a real thing climbers do, chalk will make it so that your stamina does not drain quite as fast. The game does have a checkpoint system so when you fall (which you will) it will start you back at the last checkpoint you crossed.

I touched on this in the intro, but Crytek is known for making amazing looking games and this one is one of the best-looking games for the Oculus Rift. Seriously, if I had to pick a handful of games to show off how immersive VR can be, The Climb would be a game that would make that list. Each of the three areas looks very different and for me, The Canyon was the most breathtaking. I found my self looking all over (much to the chagrin of my neck!) as everything was so detailed.

The Climb is a very impressive experience for the Oculus Rift. Calling it a game might be a bit of a stretch, but I will say that this is an experience you will always remember. It is fun, scary and in general, it really is a great time. Once I get a new touch controller, I will certainly try it out with that.
