You may be saying that they did not make a Star Wars VR game for PlayStation VR! However, Star Wars Battlefront: X-Wing VR Mission is actually a free add on to the original (well the reboot) Star Wars Battlefront game that EA and DICE put out a few years back. Let me tell you right now, purchasing Star Wars Battlefront is worth it just so you can play this awesome Star Wars VR experience.
I have played a ton and I mean a ton of Star Wars games over the years, but few have made me as giddy as a Padawan getting their first lightsaber as this one here. While DICE made Star Wars Battlefront, it is actually Criterion Games who produced this. It was released as a tie in for the Rogue One movie and it captures the feel of Star Wars very well. When you first fire it up and you are looking up at the giant AT-AT that is walking past. You know if you are a Star Wars fan that this is going to be something very special.
Let me start by stating the obvious, this is only one mission long and you are looking at about 20 minutes of gameplay here. However, it is some of the most thrilling 20 minutes you will have with your PlayStation VR. Star Wars Battlefront: X-Wing VR Mission has three stages to it and each one will make you feel like an X-Wing piolet. The first stage is where it teaches you the basics of the controls. Here you are flying with your other X-Wing pilots and seeing the giant starships alongside you as well as being able to look around your cockpit is really cool.
You eventually go through hyperspace and find yourselves in an asteroid belt. Here you need to shoot down asteroids as well as use the speed boost to get through some tighter experiences. Then you have the main event of what Star Wars Battlefront: X-Wing VR Mission offers. You get a distress call from a Y-Wing and you need to protect it from Tie Fighters and a Star Destroyer. To say that this is awesome is the biggest understatement ever.
You actually feel like you are in a Star Wars movie! Blasting down Tie Fighters is cool, but it is flying super close to a Star Destroyer, taking down its cannons that really makes you say wow. A huge reason for this is that Star Wars Battlefront: X-Wing VR Mission looks like a million bucks. It also controls very well too; you just play the game using the DualShock 4 controller and I have zero complaints about how the game controls. It is the kind of experience where while it is short, you will want to play through it time and time again.
I really cannot praise Star Wars Battlefront: X-Wing VR Mission highly enough. While you do have to have a copy of Star Wars Battlefront (the first one) to play this. That game can be found for 5 – 10 bucks! It is short, but it is a truly awesome experience and one of the most memorable that I have had with my PlayStation VR. I really wish that EA would let Criterion Games make a full game in this style.
