I am surprised that there are not more games that try and emulate what games such as Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley do! Well, that is kind of what they are going for with Racoon Lagoon and it is done very, very well. If you want a cute, relaxing and also pretty darn deep kind of VR experience for your Oculus Rift then be sure to take a closer look at Racoon Lagoon.

The story of Racoon Lagoon is very cute. There is this ragtag group of raccoons that end up shipwrecked on an island…. An island that has a broken heart. So, you need to help the raccoons settle on this new island, but you also need to deal with the islanders and help them and also help mend the broken heart of the island. It is done is a fun way and I actually found myself caring about some of the characters that I was dealing with.

The way that you play the game is rather interesting. The game is all about looting and trading. You need to get something for a particular character, but 99/100 you need someone from another character to make a trade. You can find plenty of items in the wild, but there is a kind of interesting puzzle mechanic at play here as you talk to people and trade stuff. The game also has currency that you can use and earn. This is pivotal as there are some items in the game you can only get by purchasing them.

It is pretty cool in the way that just as you feel you have seen all the game has to offer it tries to spice things up. I was not expecting as many biomes as there were (there are eight) and each one brings with it, its own set of challenges, people and things for you to do. I was actually very impressed with how much content Racoon Lagoon has packed into it. This is a game that is certainly going to keep you very busy. What I really like about this game is that it gives you a kind of relaxing experience, but at the same time it really does make you think. It is the trading of items that I really liked; in many ways, it reminds me of The Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening when you have to trade up items in that game.

As you can see from the screenshots, Racoon Lagoon has a ton of style in the visual department. I could easily see them making some great merch for this game. While the visuals are fantastic and certainly cute, it is the “visuals” that are causing the most problems with this game. The movement in the game is not teleportation based and as a result this is a game that is well known for making people feel motion sick. I did not get it too bad, but after one session of close to an hour, I must admit I was feeling it. I do hope that they tinker with the movement in a future update.

I think that Racoon Lagoon for the Oculus Rift is a very, very charming game. It is like part Animal Crossing, party Stardew Valley and a sprinkling of Link’s Awakening too. It is very well made and while the motion sickness may be an issue for some, it is a game that made me smile the whole time I was playing it.

Pros:

The visuals are fantastic

The style of the game has a lot of charm

I like the way you trade with characters

Plenty of missions to do and people to talk to

It is very easy to get into

Cons:

May cause pretty bad motion sickness

Might be a bit too “cute” for some
