Gran Turismo VR is very interesting to talk about. Like games such as Ace Combat 7 and Star Wars Battlefront. Gran Turismo VR is not a standalone game. Instead, this is something that you can download for Gran Turismo Sport on the PlayStation 4. So, you have to take that into consideration when looking at the game. As awesome as it would have been to have everything that Gran Turismo Sport offered in VR that is not the case.
The Gran Turismo series is known for being gorgeous. Heck, I remember when the first game was being teased that some swore it had to be early footage of the PlayStation 2! Since then, high quality car models have been a real trademark of the series. Now as you would expect, Gran Turismo VR on the PSVR loses some of the quality that the regular game has, but this is still one fantastic looking game.
Sitting in the driver’s seat of a car I could never in a million years afford is awesome. I was very impressed with the level of detail and how “real” it all looked. Some of the scenery that you drive past has that cardboard look, but that is the case with the main game too. So I would say that in its own right, this is a great looking game, just know it is a bit of a downgrade in terms of what you see on your TV.
What about the gameplay? Well as I said they do not let you play the full game in VR. Instead, they give you two things that you can do. You can view the cars in a showroom which is cool if you are into cars. You can also race! This sounds cool and you can use all the tracks, but you can only take part in one on one races! The PS4 to be fair would have struggled to do a full racing game in VR, but they could have at least had a couple more cars! Heck, they did not even put a time trial mode in here, you always have to race against another car. I find the lack of a time trial even odder than the races all being one vs one.
The controls are great and being able to glance at your mirrors is really cool and way handier than you would think. I also found that being in VR actually made it easier for me to gauge my speed when taking corners. It is very hard to explain, but if you play the game, you will certainly know what I mean. So from a gameplay point of view I have to say that it plays very, very well. I just wish that there was more to actually do. Still as just an “extra mode” it does what it does very well.
I had a lot of fun with Gran Turismo Sport VR on the PlayStation VR. As an extra mode to an already cool game, I think it is great. I would probably say it is the best example of how to do racing on the PSVR. I am not sure I would say it is worth buying Gran Turismo Sport just for the VR mode, but if you like the series, you will not be disappointed with this extra VR mode.
The racing feels fast
The racing works great in VR
Lots of tracks to race on
Great sense of speed
I liked using my mirrors
Only one on one racers
Seriously, why is there no time trial mode!
