When I heard that the people who made this game were inspired by things like The Matrix, Tron and one of my forgotten and underappreciated favorites, Johnny Mnemonic. I was all in. There is just something so very cool about the idea of playing as a computer hacker and I really do think that VR can add a lot to a game that is about being inside cyberspace.

The story of the game is that you are an elite hacker and you are required to hack into different systems and steal a bunch of data. You need to get in, get what you need and then hopefully get out before anyone even realizes that you were there. The whole game takes place in cyberspace and as a result, it looks great. I would say that the visuals are like a cross between Tron and The Lawnmower Man and I mean that in the most complimentary way.

I feel that Darknet is a rather hard game to explain, it is not hard to play thanks to the very cool and easy way the game explains things to you as you play, but just talking about it is kind of tough… but I will try. Basically, you enter a “place” and then you have to perform a hack. You have all kinds of tools at your disposal which you can use to hack such as Trojans and worms and using these at the right time and in the right place is the key. You see, Darknet plays war more like a strategy game than anything else. You will have antiviruses coming after you so that is something you have to prepare for as well.

When you start a hack you are faced with all these nodes and information and it is up to you to decide the best way to perform the hack. I think that patience is the way to go as if you rush in and just start blasting Trojans, worms and whatever, you will be in for a world of trouble! You can actually use all kinds of viruses at the same time if you want, but I found this was not the best way to go about things and if anything it just made it harder!

I really had a fantastic time with Darknet and in all honesty, when you are talking about it there is not a whole lot to say. But when you start playing the game it gets its hooks into you right away and you will find yourself really addicted to it. The strategy involved is just right as it provides a challenge, but it is not so challenging that it becomes frustrating. I really think this is a true gem of a game, a gem that is worth downloading on your Oculus Go. I know the price may seem a little high, but this does tend to go on special offer quite frequently.
