There is certainly no shortage of VR games that make you feel like a wizard that is for sure. As a fan of Harry Potter, I am always looking for that VR experience that is going to make me feel like I am in Hogwarts. While I must admit right off the bat that Waltz of the Wizard isn’t quite as “Harry Potter” as I would have liked. It is a solid experience and one that I feel if they were to make a sequel, building upon this would be very “spellbinding” indeed.

The game sees you in this creepy tower. They absolutely nailed the atmosphere here and at first you kind of wonder what the heck you are supposed to do. Well, you have a “friend” in the form of a spirit trapped inside a skull that is there to help you. This is funny, annoying and helpful all rolled into one. Here you can learn about your powers and mess around with the cauldron. A huge part of the fun of the game for me was finding all the stuff that is hidden. Mixing potions in your cauldron to come up with new spells is something that is so well done I really wish there was more of it.

You can blast things with a fireball or you can use a mystic looking crossbow. There is not a whole lot to the game in all honesty and you will probably blow through all that it has to offer in just a couple of hours. However, Waltz of the Wizard is a free VR experience for the Oculus Rift and I must say that this is one of the most polished free VR experiences I have had with my Oculus Rift. Some might say it is short, lacking in things to do and so on. However, for something that is free it is actually pretty damn good.

It is the kind of thing you can fire up every now and again and mess around by casting spells and using the cauldron to mix potions. There are only a handful of things you can place into the cauldron and there are eight (I am pretty sure it is eight) spells and they are all fun to mess around with. Finding out about different dimensions and maybe even going a little bit to the dark side are some of the most fun I have had pretending to be a VR wizard.

You may be thinking that I am not saying a great deal about Waltz of the Wizard for the Oculus Rift, but truth be told there is not a huge amount to this. It is a fun experience that is for sure and for free I guess you cannot complain about the lack of content. I am really, really hopeful that a lot of people like this game and the developers do not throw in the magic towel and make a full-on release with this magical engine they have created.

Pros:

You feel like a wizard

You can mess around with different spells

The controls are very easy to get to grips with

The game is free!

The skull has a strange sense of humor

Cons:

Could have used a few more spells
