Few games embrace “VR” the way that TECHNOLUST on the Oculus Rift does. By that I mean VR is actually a huge part of the story of this game! If you like games with a heavy sci-fi setting then TECHNOLUST is a game that you simply must play. Considering this is an indie game it is one of the most impressive sandbox-style games the Rift has to offer.
I think that the best way to describe the overall style of TECHNOLUST is that it is a mixture of awesome sci-fi movies. I would say The Matrix, Bladerunner and Ready Player One are probably the three that I would say the game most closely resembles. The story is pretty awesome and what starts out as you looking to get a file, evolves into a massive adventure that has mass suicide, AI going wild and much, much more. Heck, you do not even stay on the same planet for the whole game! If you are a sci-fi fan, you will no doubt be hooked by this.
As well as having a great story, TECHNOLUST also nails it in the style department. Every area that you go to feels like a real living world. You have people to talk to, robots to interact with and pretty much everything that you come across can be touched. It is pretty amazing just how “interactive” this world is and it is one of the best settings of a game I have come across in my experience with the Oculus Rift.
Now, one of the things that is really neat about TECHNOLUST is that while part of the game has you exploring and talking to people. The other part has you in a virtual world, so yes you are in a virtual world, inside of a virtual world! Here you take part in more action-based kinds of scenarios and many of these have a resemblance to old arcade games and that is something I thought was really cool. It is this aspect that really reminded me of Ready Player One.
The game really wants you to explore every nook and cranny and it certainly does not hold your hand. This is a game that wants you to really feel like you are in this world and in that regard, I do think that they succeed. The game is great, but there are a couple of annoying things about it that I do feel need to be addressed. First of all, the controls can sometimes be clunky and while you can interact with a ton (and I mean a ton) of stuff, sometimes there are things that feel like you should be able to touch and you cannot.
Then we have the product placement. This is a little on the nose, so much so that I refuse to give it any more plugs in this review! However, you will be seeing the same advertising for certain games and PC products over and over again. Hey, I get it. The real world is actually like this, we have advertising all over the place. I just wish they were a little more varied in the advertisements they show.
I think that TECHNOLUST is a must play kind of game for the Oculus Rift. It is a true joy to get through and while it is a story-based game. I could easily see myself going back and playing through this again. If you like stuff such as Bladerunner, The Matrix, Tron, Ready Player One and other awesome sci-fi movies. You really owe it to yourself to play this one here.
