There is not exactly a ton of choice when it comes to truly epic RPG’s for the Oculus Rift, but Shadow Legend VR is one that really does deserve some special attention. This is a fantastic blueprint that many other developers should follow when it comes to making a VR RPG. It is a truly fun experience and one that is an essential playthrough for anyone looking for a great VR experience for their Oculus Rift.

While I love my story-driven RPG’s I must admit that the overall story is perhaps the weakest aspect of the game. The basics are that you play the role of the Grand Master of the Knights of Templar and you need to protect and save the land from this evil demon king. It is not a bad story by any means, but it is very by the numbers, but it does give you the motivation to keep moving forward.

Shadow Legends VR has what you would expect from an RPG. There are plenty of puzzles for you to solve and these are quite well done and challenging without being too cryptic. There is plenty of exploration to do, although I do wish there was a bit more free roam in the game as I like the world they have created here and then we have the combat! Combat is always a major feature of a VR RPG and this game does it very well.

You can use ranged weapons and magic abilities if you like, but I am all about that melee combat. I have read some people say the combat is shallow, but I think it is a great deal of fun. The harder you swing your weapons the more damage you will do. While the enemy AI is not the smartest, I have come across they can still overwhelm you and force you to change things up. What I like is how if you attack them just right, they will get a highlight on them that allows you to hack off a limb! The game also has some pretty epic bosses for you to face and these are a ton of fun.

I really like how interactive they have made the world of Shadow Legend VR. You can play with your dog, you can feed your horse, you can cook, you can even use blacksmith like skills. It is very immersive and I wish other RPGs would put this much effort into making you feel like you are actually in the game.

The presentation of the game is great and the video trailers really do not do it justice. It has a very fantasy art style to it and for the most part, I really have no complaints about the way the game looks. The voice acting is pretty fun, but what really sets this apart is the fact that when you are given dialogue actions, you do not just have to pick one and press a button. The game has speech recognition so you can actually say the lines and the game will pick them up. This greatly helps with the immersion and it works incredibly well, it picked up what I said every time.

I had a great deal of fun with Shadow Legend VR on the Oculus Rift. It is very impressive what a small team was able to do here and I would love to see what they could do now that they have this game engine to play with. It is a fun VR RPG and while not perfect it is one of the most enjoyable, I have played in quite some time.
