Budget Cuts for the Oculus Rift is one of the most fun VR games I have played in quite some time. What is interesting about this game is that it actually started out life as a free demo a few years back. I will be honest and say that I completely missed the boat on that so I came into this with no preconceptions of what to expect. Well, I can tell you right away that Budget Cuts is one of the most challenging, interesting, funny and downright fun games I have played in a while.

The setting of Budget Cuts is very amusing and the whole game, in general, has a real dark humor to it that I really appreciated. The idea is that you work for a big corporation and they are always trying to save some money. This along with the fact that the leader of this company is rather insane means that when you get called into HR, you are worried that you will be shut down! Oh, and did I mention, the characters in this game are robots? Well, they are and it makes for some excellent humor.

The gameplay of the game I would best describe as Metal Gear Solid meets Portal with the humor of Job Simulator sprinkled on top. The idea of each level is to get from point a to point b and escape this awful place before you are “terminated” from your job. of course, doing this is easier said than done, but you do have someone called, Winta who is going to help you out as much as they can.

You have at your disposal a ton of letter openers (basically knives) that you can use to take down the security bots. This though is not all you have; you also have a portal gun! You can use this to zipping from one place to the next, but be warned if you put a portal in a place where there is an enemy, they can shoot through it and kill you! So, you can use a portal to check if an area is safe, but there is a risk in doing so.

Get this keycard, kill that bot, go over there and so on are the main objectives that you will be doing. There is not a ton of variety here if I am honest in what the game tasks you with doing, but it is so well done and so rewarding when you do it that you do not really notice it. I also think that the storytelling and the humor help to cover this up as well. The last section of the game is very exciting and will certainly have your blood pumping the whole time you play.

Speaking of “play” I never once got any kind of motion sickness or a feeling of discomfort from playing Budget Cuts. Also, the controls are nice and precise and I actually felt like my hands were in this virtual world which was really cool. Some of the menus, when you have to pick an item such as a keycard, for example, can be a tad on the clunky side, but it does not spoil the game.

I had an absolute blast with Budget Cuts and the game was so good that I actually wished it lasted a little longer! That is not me saying that the game is too short. More that it was so great I did not want it to end. If you are looking for a fun, but also challenging, exciting and funny experience for your Oculus Rift, you cannot go wrong with this game here.

Pros:

It has a very witty sense of humor

The game is actually quite challenging

I thought that the story was fantastic

The portal gun you have is fun to use

It does have different difficulty levels

Cons:

Sometimes picking an item can be a tad clunky

It is so good I wish it lasted longer!
