You may wonder just how the Oculus Quest is going to handle a game as demanding as Robo Recall: Unplugged. Well, I can tell you right at the start of this review that the Oculus Quest really nails it and while it may lack the bells and whistles of the Oculus Rift version of the game. This Oculus Quest version of Robo Recall: Unplugged is the most fun way to experience this game.
There is a story in Robo Recall: Unplugged and it is basically that you work in the recall department of a place that deals with robots. Well, a bunch of robots have become defective and have gone homicidal! You need to “recall” all these defective robots, but you do not do that with “due process and a legal pad” you do it with an arsenal of bad as weapons and you put down those robots for good.
You would think that there would be far more epic first-person shooters available for all the VR devices. I would go as far as to say that Robo Recall: Unplugged is one of the best examples of how to do a VR first person shooter. I have played a ton of first-person shooters over the last 20 – 30 years and I think that this game does more than enough to stand out from the rest. This is a balls to the wall action packed kind of first person shooter and I feel that it is one that is impossible not to get hooked by.
You move around easily enough and the shooting mechanics are perfect. You have many different weapons that you can use. Shotguns are my personal favorite as they have some real kick to them. Blowing away robots into the sky, shooting of parts of them and just showing these defective units who is boss is so much fun. The game is a little on the short side (especially considering the over 20 bucks’ price) however, I will let it off for that as it is the kind of game that is so much fun, you can go back to it time and time again.
As far as the gameplay goes Robo Recall: Unplugged on the Oculus Quest is the best way to play this game! I am saying this as someone who has also played this on the more powerful Oculus Rift. The wireless nature of the Oculus Quest really makes you feel like you are in the action and being able to move around and turn without the worry of wires (although I did bump into my coffee table) makes the game so much more immersive than you could possibly realize.
The only downgrade is in the visuals. The most notable thing that is missing from the Oculus Quest version of Robo Recall: Unplugged is the particle effects. The overall textures as well are not as detailed as the Oculus Rift version. However, I would take these presentational sacrifices as the gameplay is just so on point and so perfect that you really do not care that the visuals are not the best. Plus, the game is so much fun you really will not care about the visuals.
Robo Recall: Unplugged is a tremendous experience on the Oculus Quest. If you want to know why the future of VR has to be devices that are wireless this game is the showcase of that. It may not be the longest game, but as of right now I would have to say that Robo Recall: Unplugged is the best first-person shooter you can get for the Oculus Quest.
