Oculus Go Game Reviews – The Well VR

There is a real gap in the market for a good fantasy RPG game on the Oculus Go. That is the gap that The Well is trying to fill. Made by some of the folks responsible for games like Left 4 Dead and Evolve. The Well is certainly a game that has gotten me very interested in what it is offering.

Let me start by saying that this game is truly gorgeous. I would go as far to say that this is one of the most visually appealing games I have had the pleasure to play. The game reminds me of a cross between Middle Earth and the world from Discworld on the original PlayStation. The whole game looks like a high end fantasy novel that has been brought to life and do not be surprised if you find yourself just looking around in the distance taking it all in.

This is an RPG and the basics of the story are that in the land of Tholl there is a fine balance. The villagers have a happy and peaceful existence and the more manic and barbaric tribes keep to themselves in the wild. This balance is torn to pieces when a demonic force known as The Tesh arises. You are chosen to put a stop to The Tesh and once again restore balance to the world.

The story is not all that developed if I am honest, but it does get the job done. As this is not the longest game in the world I do feel that they get away with the story not being as in-depth as other RPG’s are. When you start you can pick from one of four classes these are Warrior, Druid, Rogue, and Mage. While the game is short you can play through with each class and things do change a little, most notably what the characters can do.

You need to fight the Tesh and pick up gold as well as new allies on your travels. The map is a decent enough size and there are plenty of different areas and dungeons for you to explore as you progress through the game. The combat is rather basic, but it is actually very fun. I think for a first try they handled the combat perfectly and it makes we wonder just how good it would be if they made a sequel and expanded on this.

There are plenty of quests for you to do and enemies for you to fight (although I do wish there was more variety to the enemy types) so the six or so hours it takes you to beat the game do go by very fast. This though to be fair is because you are having such a fun time. As I said, you can go back and play through it again as a different class and this is actually something that I would recommend you do.

The Well is a wonderful game. The people at Turtle Rock Studios did a fantastic job here and I really hope that they take another stab at making an RPG for the Oculus Go. I had a really fun time with this and clearly, it is not as fleshed out as an RPG on the PlayStation 4. However, this is a great showcase of how an RPG on the Oculus Go should be done.

The presentation is incredibly well done

Combat is easy to get the hang of

Four different classes to play as

Possibly the best RPG on the Oculus Go!

The world is nice and large

It is a little on the short side

A few more enemy types would have been nice
