I have long been a fan of things like Indiana Jones, Tomb Raider and so on so any game that gives me the option of being an adventurer grabs my attention. That is the basic idea of Hidden Temple – VR Adventure. The people behind this game is that they wanted to make the player feel as much like an adventurer as possible.
The “story” of the game is that you are a daring treasure hunter who is on the hunt for all of the jewels and treasure that they can find. Hey, what kind of treasure hunter are you if you are not willing to stare danger in the face, laugh and then carry on? I really do think that the game does a good job in making you feel like you are in a temple that is in the middle of the jungle and a huge reason the game makes you feel this way is because of the art style that they have chosen to use.
They have gone for a cell-shaded art style and I think that it looks great. The overall style of the game I think is very reminiscent of games like Temple Run, Pitfall, Tomb Raider and Uncharted and of course with a little bit of Indy in there too. As much as I like the visuals of the game the perspective is kind of strange. I am not saying that it is bad, but you kind of feel like you are super short. I get the impression they were trying to make the temple feel big and it does, but I also felt like I was super short. Hey at the end of the day there is nothing wrong with being a pint-sized treasure hunter.
As far as the gameplay goes, Hidden Temple – VR Adventure is kind of like a point and click adventure game. It is all done in the first person (as you would expect from a VR game) and you will have to find various items as you are exploring the different rooms in the temple. It is not just the finding and using of the items that you have to do. A huge part of the game is also combining two items together in order to move forward. The easiest example of this is that you can use items to make yourself a torch so that you can see your way going forward.
Another part of the gameplay is puzzle solving. The puzzles are fun and not too tricky, I do think that they could have gone a little more in with the puzzles in the game as they are very basic. These range from moving things in the right way to moving along the right stones. The game does move along at a pretty brisk pace, but you will find that you get to the end much quicker than you would like. Seriously this is a game that you can finish in under 30 minutes! The experience is good, but I do wish that it had more.
I enjoyed my time with Hidden Temple – VR Adventure and think that it is a great use of the Oculus Go. The game while it lasts is fun, it is easy to play, looks good and you do feel like an adventurer. The main issue is purely with the length of the game it in many ways feels like a first level demo, that is how short it is. I really hope that they add some levels at a later date. If the game goes on sale, I would recommend checking this out as it is fun.
A really nice and well done art style
The temple is very well designed
It makes you feel like you are Indy or Lara Croft!
Figuring out what items go together is fun
Could be the start of a great series
The game is way too short
Speaking of short, how short is the character?
