Hidden Fortune is a free to play (actually free to start) game for the Oculus Go. It is a fun VR experience and one that mixes in a few different genres of games such as hidden object, puzzle, and adventure. Even if you decide not to purchase chapter 2 which is available now. It is still worth checking out the first chapter as it is 100 percent free!

The Story

Ok, so the story that is running through Hidden Fortune did not exactly grab me, but there is enough meat on the bone here at least to be giving you a reason to be doing what you are doing. The idea of the game is that you are a wizard and you are lending a helping hand to a group of folks who have lost some of their possessions.

Now to be fair, chapter 2 of Hidden Fortune may very well get more in-depth with the story, but that is all that is basically here for chapter 1. To be fair it is not bad at all and there is a certain charm to it, I mean being a wizard helping people find stuff is a novel idea in my book!

The Gameplay

I really like how the game has a tutorial which pretty much takes you by the hand and eases you into the game’s mechanics. In all honesty, this is not a super complicated game to figure out. You are a wizard and you can use your magic to fire off these orbs. Firing orbs is pretty much your go-to for everything that the game asks of you. Do you want to grab that item? Fire an orb at it. Want to teleport over the other side of the room? Fire an orb over there.

The gameplay is fun and it all works great with the Oculus Go controllers as you do feel like a wizard casting spells. You will have to find a series of hidden objects and when you do this you get some gold and this is how you can level up. You also will be required to do some puzzle-solving as well. The gameplay is fun, but parts of the game are not accessible until you are of a high enough level. I get what they were going for here, but to level up you have to do the same parts of the game over and over again which can get annoying.

The Presentation

I was very impressed with the way Hidden Fortune looks. For a game that is free to play (well at the start) the game has a very high level of polish to it and it is impossible not to be impressed by what they have done here. Most of the game takes place in a cave, but it looks fantastic. Every aspect of the game has a very nice kind of “shine” to it which makes it a pleasure to play.

The soundtrack is not exactly what I would call rocking. However, it does fit the tone and style of the game very well. At the end of the day, you really cannot ask for any more than that when it comes to a game’s soundtrack.

Final Thoughts

I played through the whole of Hidden Fortune and I must admit it has made me curious about paying for the next chapter. While it may repeat itself a great deal, the fact of the matter is the gameplay is actually a lot of fun and playing as a wizard in a cave helping people is kind of cool. At the end of the day, this is a free to play game so you really have nothing to lose by checking it out and giving it a chance.
